Devil’s Sinkhole To Hold Free Festival October 1 and 2 The Devil’s Sinkhole National Natural Landmark has its golden anniversary this year. The great cave was added to the list of National Natural Landmarks thanks to the recommendation of Lady Bird Johnson and was made official in 1971 at the start Glenmore of the Nixon administration. To celebrate the anniversary, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the volunteers of the Devil’s Sinkhole Society are holding a free two-day festival. While tours of the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area almost always start at the Rocksprings Visitors Center on the Rocksprings town square, for this special event guests can go directly onto the state natural area. The gate to the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area is five miles north of Rocksprings on US 377. Both Friday and Saturday evenings, the Devil’s Sinkhole Society will hold free bat emergence shows, and, on Saturday, to cap off the free two-day festival, the San Antonio Astronomical Society will host a free stargazing event at the conclusion of the bat show. The gate will be open by 6:45 P.M. for the evening shows. During the day both Friday (9 AM-3 PM) and Saturday (10-4) park, nature, conservation, and history groups will have booths to meet, greet, and educate guests. Among the presenters will be the president of the international speleology (cave science) society Dr. George Veni. Dr. Veni will conduct a few “geology walks” at the state natural area. This is the International Year of Caves and Karst which his group spearheads. One popular history group, the Buffalo Soldiers, have confirmed plans to participate. Bat Conservation International will have a booth. Scientist and Texas Master Naturalist Kim Ort will lead two nature walks on Friday. Texas Parks’ main bat specialist Superintendent Nyta Brown from Old Tunnel State Park will give two bat talks at the Rocksprings School Auditorium on Friday. Other specialists and organizations will be handy and the goal of promoting the natural beauty, long history, and wonder of Texas should be well met. The town of Rocksprings is a one-hour drive from Del Rio, Kerrville, and Uvalde. It’s two hours from San Antonio and San Angelo and two and a half from Austin.
